Health Benefits of Fiber for Dogs

Are you ready to fetch Fido a fiber-rich treat? Fiber can provide pups with a number of health benefits, including:

  • Fiber regulates your pup’s bowel movements. Fiber helps keep your dog’s GI tract on track. It not only helps keep things moving along properly, it prevents them from moving too quickly. Win-win!
  • Fiber helps with weight management. Fiber helps Fido feel full for longer which can help him lose weight over time.
  • Fiber reduces bloating. Since fiber helps move food quickly through the digestive tract, this can help reduce bloating for your four-footer.
  • It supports colon health. Fiber is excellent fuel for your canine’s colon cells, providing fuel to keep your pup’s system running smoothly without the use of extra medicine or stool softners.
  • Fiber may improve blood sugar levels in diabetic dogs. Fiber helps keep your dog’s blood sugar levels within a more consistent range, so it’s an important ingredient to consider when looking at diabetic dog foods.
  • Fiber may help alleviate clogged anal glands. One of the best benefits of fiber is that it helps bulk up your buddy’s stool, making it easier to pass. Larger, firmer stools can also make it easier for your dog to avoid clogged anal glands.

Alternative Sources of Fiber for Dogs

Pumpkin is a good source of fiber for dogs

Don’t forget that there are plenty of other ways to introduce fiber into your four-footers diet. Here are some good ways to provide fiber for your furry friend, aside from fiber-rich treats:

  • Switch to a higher fiber food High fiber dog foods aim to provide your pooch with everything he needs to maintain healthy digestive function.
  • Pumpkin — Pumpkin is a great fiber-rich food that you can share with your dog. You’ll want to serve plain, unsweetened pumpkin either raw, cooked, or pureed (be careful to avoid purchasing pumpkin pie filling by mistake — that is not good for your pooch).
  • Veterinary fiber supplements — If your pooch is constantly suffering from an upset tummy, it may be worth inquiring with your vet about fiber supplements. Fiber supplements can come in a variety of flavors so your dog may enjoy it just as much as a treat.
  • Apple Slices — Apples are a great source of fiber and can be shared with your furry best friend. Just be sure to remove the seeds, stems, and cores.
  • Berries — Berries like strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries are a great source of antioxidants and fiber. However, they should be served in moderation due to their high natural sugar content.
  • Flaxseed — Dogs can enjoy a moderate amount of flaxseed mixed in with their food, and it contains plenty of fiber along with omega 3 fatty acids.
  • Dark, leafy greens — Dogs can eat a modest amount of dark leafy greens (such as spinach or kale) for a good source of fiber. However, these should be consumed in moderation since too much calcium can lead to kidney stones.
  • Carrots — Carrots are a good source of fiber and make an amazing low calorie treat served raw or cooked.
  • Cooked green beans — Prepped, unseasoned green beans (must be cooked) are super nutritious treats for dogs with the added benefits of vitamin B6, A and C.
  • Brown rice — Brown rice has more fiber than white rice and is great grain for pups with upset stomachs.

Dogs can also be given some OTC products like Metamucil, but you should only do so after first checking with your vet. Also, double check that any OTC products you consider don’t contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener highly toxic to dogs.

Does Your Dog Really Need More Fiber?

While many dogs can benefit from increased fiber in their diets, it’s certainly not a one size fits all issue. If you notice that your canine is frequently constipated, it may be indicative that he needs more fiber in his diet.

Although excess amounts of fiber can cause GI upset and gas, fiber (in reasonable quantities) is usually safe for dogs. Always talk to your vet if you’re concerned about your doggie’s diet.

***

High-fiber dog treats can be a great way to introduce more nutrients into your dog’s diet. With plenty of flavors and textures to choose from, there’s bound to be a treat that’s just right for your furry friend.

Has your dog tried any of these treats? How do you add fiber into your dog’s diet? We’d love to hear all about it in the comments below!
