Tips for Taking Your Dog to a Bar
Before you head out the door for a night out with your dog, there are a few things you should keep in mind to maintain a positive experience for you both.
- Enjoy drinks in moderation. Being allowed to drink at a bar with your dog doesn’t mean you should go overboard. It’s great to have fun but keep a clear enough head that you both have fun and get home safely.
- Know when to share. Sharing with your dog can be a bonding experience, but remember that there are many toxic foods and drinks dogs can’t have. This obviously includes alcohol, but chocolate, grapes, and onions are also not safe for Spot. When those puppy dog eyes make their appearance, be sure you only share dog-safe foods.
- Take plenty of bathroom breaks. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement, and that’s when things can slip your mind. Make sure you’re taking your dog for lots of bathroom breaks. If you think you might forget, set an alarm every few hours so your mind is free to focus on what a great time you’re having. And don’t forget plenty of poop bags!
- Start with a walk. As the saying goes, “a tired dog is a well-behaved dog.” So, be sure to get your little guy or gal some exercise before you hit the bar. A brisk walk should help calm down low-energy dogs, but high-energy dog breeds may need a little more canine enrichment. You may want to try playing some dog walking games, for example.
- Make sure your pup interacts politely with other canines. If you venture to a bar with an off-leash area, keep an eye on your dog and watch that he’s playing appropriately with other four-footers. And if your dog is reactive, it’s better to just enjoy other kinds of outings.
- Stay hydrated. Hydration is essential for you and your pup, given that you’ll be enjoying alcohol and your four-footer will be enjoying plenty of physical activity. So, order a water for yourself every now and then and bring a travel bottle and bowl for your dog.
