Tips for Enjoying Your Rover-Friendly Restaurant Trip

take a dog to a restaurant

Dining with a doggo isn’t always easy, but with proper preparation, you can enjoy your mutt-friendly meal in relative peace. We have a few tips and tricks for making the most of your public pooch outing.

When visiting a restaurant with your dog:

  • Walk your woof before your meal: Your barker needs a bathroom break before settling in. Take him for a stroll, and pack poop bags to mind his mess.
  • Exercise your pup in advance: Enjoying a meal means your canine needs to be calm rather than raring to go. A walk or trip to one of the best dog parks in Dallas can help tucker him out.
  • Bring treats for your sniffer: While some dog parks have mutt-friendly menus, that isn’t always the case. Pack treats or a pup-friendly snack to include your canine in the dining experience. These can also help keep your pupper patient if service is slow.
  • Keep your canine leashed: A tie-down or short leash that is 6 feet or shorter is best for dining in public with your doggo. Ideally, you want a lead long enough for him to sit down and relax at your side but not enough for him to wander to other tables.
  • Learn and follow the rules: Most dog-friendly restaurants expect visiting dogs to be leashed and well-behaved, but others may have additional rules you must follow, like only sitting at specific outdoor tables. Be a good guest and respect the restaurant’s  wishes.
  • Consider the weather: Dallas summers are notoriously steamy and dangerous for humans and doggos who stay outdoors for too long. Since the best dog-friendly restaurants in Dallas are all patio-style seating setups, it’s best to skip them on hot days to keep you and your canine safe.
  • Don’t let your doggo bother other diners: Not everyone wants to eat with a doggo eyeing their meal. Keep your canine close, and respect the space of others.
  • Only visit with an obedient, friendly Fido: A restaurant isn’t the place for a people or dog-selective sniffer or a pup who hasn’t mastered basic leash manners and commands like sit. Stick to solo park picnics or backyard barbecues to keep your mutt-inclusive meal safe, happy, and stress-free.
  • Ensure your dog’s vaccinations are current: Vaccinations protect your pooch and others from sicknesses like rabies, parvo, and Bordetella, to name only a few. Ask your vet which vaccines they recommend before your next restaurant outing with your Rover to keep him safe.
  • Apply flea prevention if you haven’t already: Public places frequented by pups can harbor fleas, leaving you and your mutt miserable if any cling on for the ride home. Keep your canine’s preventatives up-to-date to prevent an itchy disaster.

As you can see, Dallas is ripe with Rover-friendly restaurants. Now, get out there and visit one with your woof!
