Quick Picks: The Best Dog Beds

  • Big Barker [Best for Big Dogs] Measuring 7 inches thick, equipped with a cushy headrest, and large enough for the biggest pups around, this is the very best choice for colossal canines.
  • Kuranda Dog Bed [Best for Easy Cleaning]This elevated pet bed is great for indoor or outdoor use, features a chew-proof frame, and it’s backed by the manufacturer’s 1-year warranty.
  • BarkBox Memory Foam Dog Bed [Best Value Pick]A truly affordable orthopedic option, this bed is made with memory foam to help cradle your canine in spectacularly cozy fashion.

Like us, your pup needs a comfortable place to rest, which is why finding a quality dog bed is a must.

But dog beds vary widely, and you’ll want to keep your pup’s specific needs in mind when making your choice.

This includes everything from your pet’s size and age, to any health problems he may have. You’ll also need to make sure you pick a bed that is easy to take care of, durable, and, of course, comfy!

All of these variables can make the task of picking a bed seem overwhelming — especially for first-time owners.

But don’t worry! We’ll dig into this cushy topic one layer at a time below, and explain everything you need to know. We’ll also identify 19 of the best dog beds on the market.

And if you want to jump ahead to a certain section, that’s fine too!

Why Bother With Dog Beds?

Even if your four-footer sleeps with you in your California king or is allowed to crash on the couch, he still needs his own bed.

A dog bed is more than a relaxation station; it’s a safe space for your dog to unwind that’s entirely his own. And beds only grow more important as your pup ages, as he’ll likely need some additional support for stiff joints.

For that matter, dogs who suffer from hip dysplasia, arthritis, or other joint issues will get a better night’s sleep if provided with a supportive bed.

Some beds are also designed to provide additional security for skittish doggos, or help keep your dog warmer or cooler during temperature extremes.

There are practical benefits to dog beds as well, as they keep potential allergens out of your bed, and they are easier to wash than traditional furniture is. The latter concern is especially important for those with puppies or older dogs, as potty accidents are bound to happen.

And finally, while your dog won’t care much about how a bed looks, some models are so adorable and stylish, that they will make you smile every time you see them (just keep reading to see a few examples).

1. Casper Dog Bed

About: The Casper Dog Bed takes the pressure off your dog’s joints with its memory-foam design, while additional layers of durable support foam create an even sleep surface.

Its plush material and elevated bolsters complete the cozy human-grade pick that’s great for catching Zzzs but not too warm for fluffier dogs.

Casper Dog Bed, Plush Memory Foam, Medium, Blue

Casper Dog Bed

Ultra comfy foam dog bed based on the popular mattress brand, Casper!

Features: Memory foam and support foam make up the core of this Casper bed, providing pressure-relieving comfort paired with plenty of joint support.

Special care has been taken to ensure this bed works in conjunction with your dog’s instincts, with excess material giving enough wiggle room for digging doggos to scratch away to make the perfect place to sleep.

Offered in three colors, this bed is made of a durable microfiber blend that can withstand daily use. The bed also features a removable, machine-washable cover for easy cleaning.

Sizes: Available in small, medium, and large, this bed is suitable for most dog breeds. The large-size option is rated for dogs up to 90 pounds, so giant breeds will not fit on this bed, unfortunately.

Takeaways:

  • Made of memory & support foam
  • Removable durable blended microfiber cover that’s machine washable
  • Available in three colors (blue, grey, and sand) & three sizes (large suited for dogs up to 90 lbs)
  • Sewn-in pockets hide zippers for a more finished look
  • 30-day risk-free trial

PROS

Owners love how thick this bed is, offering plenty of cushion for heavy and arthritic dogs who need it most. Durability and washability were other high points with reviewers. The bolsters’ relatively low height is noteworthy as well, as they’re not trip hazards to older or mobility-challenged dogs.

CONS

Price was a sticking point for some reviewers, as was the lack of waterproofing on the cover. While the cover is removable for washing, the inner foam cannot be machine washed, making accidents a pain to clean. If you have a dog with bladder issues, this bed is not ideal.

2. Big Barker

About: The Big Barker is a large orthopedic bed that mimics the style of a human bed, complete with a cushy pillow-like bulge.

Thick enough to support heavier dogs without compressing over time, this piece is ideal for long-lasting comfort.

Big Barker Dog Bed

Big Barker Dog Bed

7″ of memory & support foam designed for large doggos

Features: Handmade in the USA, the Big Barker offers seven inches of foam into a quality bed that’s easy on the eye.

It is manufacturer-guaranteed not to lose more than 10% of its shape for 10 years and offers peace of mind with its non-toxic American-made foam.

There are four neutral colors to choose from, and its microfiber cover is removable and machine-washable for regular maintenance. The fabric stays cool to keep your dog comfortable, and the interior doesn’t emit any strange chemical odors — a common issue with foam beds.

Sizes: Offered in large, extra-large, and giant, the Big Barker is made specifically for big dogs.

The large is suited for Labrador-sized dogs, while extra-large is ideal for Rottweilers and above. The giant option is made for super-sized dogs like Great Danes.

This bed is too stiff and tall for smaller breeds, so this one if only for the big boys!

Takeaways:

  • 7 inches of high-quality memory and support foam
  • Comes in 4 colors and three sizes (large, extra-large, and giant)
  • Removable microfiber cover is machine washable
  • Manufacturer-guaranteed to not lose 10% of its shape for 10 years
  • Made in the USA

PROS

Reviewers were impressed with the spring and strength of this bed’s foam, some even demonstrating it in videos using their own body weight. Owners of older dogs especially loved the support it offered and the lack of a trip hazard, as seen with high-sided beds. The material strength won praise as well, standing up to routine dog pawing and digging.

CONS

Owners found the price to be high, and some complained that the bed’s cover wrinkles. Some dogs had an initial hesitation in using the bed because of the foam’s height, too.

3. Bagel Pet Bed

About: The Bagel Pet Bed is the top pick for pups who embrace their inner roly-poly with its raised sides and soft center.

This bed’s polyester fill provides comfortable support, while its size scales up enough to accommodate large dog breeds.

Bagel Pet Bed

Majestic Bagel Pet Bed

A rounded, bagel-style bed perfect for curling up

Features: Snuggling up in the Bagel Pet Bed is as comfortable as it is cute with its included bolsters for spine support.

These raised edges give your dog a secure, nest-like area to cuddle to his heart’s content. The base is filled with high loft polyester and is waterproof, protecting against accidents and drool.

There are seven solid color options to choose from, all of which are machine-washable and dryable. For larger bed sizes, a commercial washing machine may be necessary, as they may not fit in a typical, residential unit.

Sizes: Available in four sizes from 24-inch to 52-inch, this bed can fit most large breeds up to 110 pounds with ease. Those with giant breeds will need to keep looking for a proper fit.

Takeaways:

  • Hefty bolsters ideal for snugglers and dogs who curl up to sleep
  • Filled with high-loft polyester
  • Waterproof design
  • 7 color options
  • 4 sizes (largest fits up to 110lb dog)

PROS

Reviewers gave this bed high marks for comfort and size, as it allows large dogs to stretch out while still providing a plush pillow surface to keep them cozy. The material is also noted to be durable and thick, which are must-haves for any dog bed. Those with couch-hogs pointed out that the design mimics the feel of a sofa, curbing the behavior of couch cruising canines.

CONS

While it is machine-washable, reviewers found the bed difficult to wash, as it lacked a removable cover and is often too large for traditional machines. Some also found the bed to lack support at its base, which can be a problem if you have an older dog. The high sides can be a tripping hazard as well for mobility-challenged dogs.

4. PetFusion Memory Foam Bed

About: Comfort and support are paramount with the PetFusion Memory Foam Bed.

Combining pressure-relieving memory foam with cozy bolsters, this bed has the best of both worlds, allowing dogs to curl up or stretch out.

Features: With its solid 4-inch memory foam base, your dog can rest without uncomfortable lumps or pressure, while the skid-resistant bottom helps prevent the bed from scooting around on your floor.

The zippered cover keeps the foam hidden away from curious teeth, and assembly is a breeze — just insert the memory foam base and you’re ready to go!

Offered in three neutral tones, this bed should match any interior. The durable cover is removable for machine washing, and its water-resistance keeps accidents from ruining the foam core.

Sizes: Available in four sizes from small to XXL jumbo, there is an option for every dog from tiny terriers to gigantic Great Danes.

Takeaways:

  • 4 Inches of solid memory foam
  • Zippered cover is water-resistant, easy to remove, and machine washable
  • 3 Colors (Brown, Sandstone, and Grey)
  • 4 Sizes (Small – XXL Jumbo)

PROS

This bed earned high marks for comfort and durability, with reviewers noting how well the memory foam retained its shape. The ease of cleaning was another favorite feature, as each component has its own removable cover, including the inner memory foam pad.

CONS

Some owners stated the bed had a temporary chemical smell upon opening. And while the fabric is noted as being waterproof, reviewers complained that this was not the case. If your dog is accident-prone, you might want to keep looking for something that can repel liquids.

5. Midwest Bolster Crate Bed

About: The Midwest Bolster Crate Bed provides a comfortable, plush surface for relaxing and preventing pressure calluses.

This bed is made with your dog’s crate and shape in mind, yet it provides bolsters to offer a little additional comfort for your pooch.

The plush-topped base contains enough cotton padding to keep pups comfy, while the low side bolsters are easy to clear, even for mobility-challenged dogs.

Available in six color options, this crate pad can be washed and dried at home in most washing machines and dryers. It is not waterproof, however, so if your dog has frequent accidents, you should look elsewhere.

Sizes: With nine sizes to choose from, all breeds are covered from Chihuahuas to Great Danes.

Takeaways:

  • Rectangular dog bed designed to fit in a variety of standard-sized crates
  • Low bolsters to provide added comfort
  • Made of plush cotton padding
  • 6 Color options (Pink, Grey, Cinnamon, Blue, White, Multicolor)
  • 9 Sizes (Largest fits dogs up to 110 lbs)
  • Extremely affordable

PROS

Reviewers praise this bed’s portability and versatility, as it can be easily rolled or folded for travel or storage. It also has tails wagging over how well it stands up to machine washing and daily use. It’s a good option for dogs prone to overheating as well, as it provides padding without too much fuzz.

CONS

This doesn’t have as much cushion as other beds and is not recommended for chewers. Because of its filling, you may encounter lumpy or uneven surfaces. Some reviews also noted that the bed seems to shed excessive fibers.

Offered in 14 shades, including neutral and bright colors, the bed features a waterproof bottom. The bed can be machine washed and dried, though it may be difficult depending on the washer’s size.

Sizes: Although this bed is available in large and jumbo sizes, those labels are a bit misleading, as these beds only accommodate dogs up to 25 pounds. Unfortunately, there are no sizes available for larger dogs.

Takeaways:

  • Ultra-plush dog bed for dogs who like to curl up and cuddle
  • Cozy fleece top with high bolsters
  • Waterproof bottom to prevent stains or leaking
  • Available in 14 colors
  • 2 Sizes, fits dogs up to 25 lbs (for small dogs only)

PROS

The softness of this bed is a hit with reviewers, and its flexible shape allows your pup to dig to make his perfect sleeping spot. The bed was also complimented for standing up to regular machine washing.

CONS

Owners noted that the bed does not maintain its shape well, which can be a concern if your dog is older or needs support. Reviewers also found that the bed’s material sheds and snagged easily, especially on nails. Due to its plush nature, it may not be ideal for dogs prone to overheating. The use of “non-toxic fibers” for the stuffing is vague and non-specific.

7. Snoozer Luxury Cozy Cave Pet Bed

About: The Snoozer Luxury Cozy Cave Bed is an irresistible pick for dogs that love to tunnel in blankets.

The plush pillow bottom cradles your dog’s body while the microsuede cover mimics the feel of a blanket without the risk of getting tangled up.

  • Thick sherpa plush pillow with microsuede top
  • Poly/cedar fill
  • 35 color options (solid shades & patterns)
  • 3 sizes (small, large, extra-large)

PROS

The reviews are in, and this bed is a hit with snuggle bugs, thanks to the coverage and cushioning it provides. The bed’s durability also has tails wagging, as it tolerates regular use and washing without falling apart.

CONS

The bed does take some breaking in, so dogs may initially be hesitant due to the tightness of the opening and stiffness of the fill. Others noted that the bed seems to tip easy for extreme burrowers. Due to its set up, it isn’t the best option for dogs with mobility issues.

8. Kuranda Dog Bed

About: The Kuranda Dog Bed is an elevated bed that allows your dog to rest in a dry, cool place, whether he’s inside or out.

It’s a top pick for durability, with a lasting frame and no-frills approach.

The strength and durability of this bed shine with users. It’s powerful enough to support the crushing weight of mastiffs, and the aluminum frame repels chewing attempts. It’s a great choice for dogs who otherwise would be bed-less due to destructive habits.

CONS

The bed requires assembly, which some reviewers complained was difficult. The raised nature of this bed can be difficult for arthritic dogs to climb onto, as well. The lack of plushness or sides can be an issue with thin or skinny dogs that need extra warmth, too.

Reviews praised how spacious and comfortable the bed is. The ease of disassembling and washing the bed makes it an attractive option as well.

Reviewers found that the orthopedic option didn’t offer as much support as other beds, and durability was questionable in the long-run. As stated by the manufacturer, this is not a bed for chewers, either.

Things to Think About: Bed-Selection Considerations

Picking the best dog bed for your pooch requires that you really consider what your dog, in all his unique snowflake glory, wants and needs in a dog bed.

How do you do this? Observe your dog like a creepy canine stalker. Take note of his favorite sleeping positions and where he likes to park his behind.

Your dog’s personality and temperament should always be the number one consideration when shopping for a dog bed.

While your personal preferences are important too, purchasing a bed that only needs your needs and not your dog’s wishes will not go over well (you may end up with a glamorous looking bed while your dog continues to sleep on the floor)!

How old is your pooch?

As your pup ages, his needs will change. A puppy may need a chew-proof bed, for instance, while an older dog needs a supportive bed that is easy to climb into and out of.

Older dogs will also require more support than younger dogs in the form of memory foam or padding, commonly found in orthopedic dog beds.

glucosamine for old dogs

Non-slip bottoms and waterproof materials are good options for older dogs, too. Self-warming dog beds can also help with keeping them cozy.

Best Options:

  • Orthopedic dog beds with multiple layers of memory and support foam
  • Self-warming dog beds
  • Waterproof beds (if your senior dog is incontinent)

How much does your dog weigh?

Your dog’s size greatly affects what bed will work for him.

Heavier breeds like mastiffs require thicker padding to adequately support them, while Shih-Tzus and other smaller breeds will find such beds stiff and uncomfortable.

Generally, owners of larger breeds should expect to pay more for thickly-padded dog beds, as these dogs have extra support requirements. Many of the cuter, more stylized dog beds with just a bit of padding will work fine for petite pups, but won’t be bulky enough to satisfy XL pooches.

Regardless, you’ll always want to make sure you’re purchasing a dog bed that’s sized correctly for your canine.

Best Options:

  • Big Barker for extra-large and giant dogs
  • PetFusion – with X layers of foam – is another top pick for medium and large dogs

What’s your dog’s sleep style?

Like his weight, your dog’s sleeping style can influence what bed will work best.

Some dogs prefer to curl up and will benefit from a rounded bed with supportive walls, while others like to stretch out from paw to paw and need something flat.

Similarly, if your dog likes to rest his head on something, side bolsters or pillow-like inserts may benefit him.

Is your pooch a chewer, digger, or “nester?”

Rougher dogs can make quick work of delicate dog beds, quickly tearing open soft materials in minutes. If your dog plays on the rougher side, look for a bed that is durable and can withstand your dog’s demands.

chewing dog

If your dog is rough on beds with pawing or gnawing, you should pay close attention to a bed’s material to ensure it’s up for the task. Thick canvas and corduroy are often the fabrics of choice with the best dog beds for chewers.

For diggers, the bed’s fabric should have a little give to accommodate pawing behavior.

Best Options:

  • Canvas
  • Corduroy

Does your dog have frequent accidents?

Puppies and older dogs may have bladder issues, making waterproof protection a must.

A removable cover is the best route, allowing you to wash it as needed. Washing an entire bed with each accident is not only a hassle; it can be impossible if the bed doesn’t fit in your machine.

Best Options:

  • Beds with removable covers
  • Beds with dual covers (an inner waterproof cover to protect the foam cushioning, and a soft outer layer that can be removed and washed
  • Mesh beds on raised platforms that can be sprayed down

What’s your canine’s preferred climate?

That fuzzy fleece bed might be nice for a skinny, short-haired dog like a greyhound, or an older senior dog, but it would be too warm for a fuzzier floof like a husky.

husky dog toys

For long-haired doggos, you should look into elevated beds that allow for airflow.

Consider the weather where you live as well. Regions with months of icy cold weather may opt for warmer dog beds, whereas those who deal mostly with hot and humid weather may find raised, elevated dog beds that allow for added air circulation are the best pick.

Best Options:

  • Self-warming or electrically-heated dog beds for thin, lightly-furred, skinny, or old dogs (also ideal for cold climates)
  • Elevated dog beds with airflow for thick double-coated dogs (also great for hot climates)

Is your dog nervous or anxious?

Shy or anxious dogs tend to appreciate beds designed with nesting, burrowing, or cuddling in mind. Some nervous pups are greatly comforted by meds that allow them to hide under blankets and get extra-cozy.

Does your dog have allergies?

If your dog has environmental allergies, you may want to consider opting for a hypoallergenic dog bed cover.

Some brands will provide you with a custom-sized dog-friendly bed case (similar to an extra-large pillowcase) which allows you to stuff your own filling and see how your dog’s skin responds to the material.

Molly Mutt is one such company, offering a variety of fun patterns for dog bed covers that can be stuffed with anything you’d like. Molly Mutt suggests stuffing the beds with old towels or clothes so that they smell like your dog’s favorite humans!

Best Options:

  • Dog bed that allows for custom fill options (such as Molly Mutt)

Where will the bed be used?

The space where the bed will be can greatly impact your options.

For example, an indoor-only bed can be more plush and fuzzy, while the best dog bed for outdoor kennels is something easy to clean, waterproof, and typically raised.

An indoor/outdoor dog bed is another option, allowing you to bring your dog’s bed where they go. These are usually made with a durable fabric like vinyl.

While they aren’t as popular, owners who live in tight quarters may want to consider corner dog beds, which are specifically designed to be nestled into the corner of a room.

Not only can these be a major space-saver, they can also be a good option for nervous or skittish dogs who need an added sense of security.

Features to Consider When Shopping for a Dog Bed

Always make sure you look for the features that will help your dog remain comfy and make it easier for you to take care of the bed.

Removable Cover

A removable cover is the best route for keeping your dog’s bed looking and smelling great.

If you suspect even semi-frequent laundering (whether due to an older dog with incontinence issues or an active dog who spends weekends romping in the mud), a dog bed with a removable cover will bypass the need to wash the entire bed, resulting in a longer-lasting bed.

Zipper enclosures are ideal, as Velcro can accidentally be opened, revealing filling that is often too tempting for dogs to ignore.

These covers allow you to wash your dog’s bed more frequently, as washing an entire bed can be difficult.

You may want to consider purchasing an extra one or two removable covers so that you can switch out the covers while one is in the wash. Many beds offer the option for a 2nd cover, and some even include a bonus cover in the base price.

Machine-Washable

If you can’t get your paws on a dog bed with a removable cover, a machine-washable dog bed is the next best thing.

While the majority of dog beds feature removable covers, some smaller dog beds don’t bother with the liner and instead will have you wash the entire bed.

Handwashing anything isn’t fun — especially a smelly dog bed. Usually, items that are handwash-only are fragile as well, something you generally don’t want in such a heavily used item. So avoid handwash-only dog beds (which – we should note – are pretty uncommon) unless your dog is extraordinarily gentle and there is a particular style of bed you’re really after.

Even for machine-washable dog beds, ideally you’ll want to choose one where the stuffing can be removed. If it can’t, check user reviews to ensure that the bed’s stuffing doesn’t clump or come apart after washing, as this is a common complaint when stuffing goes through the wash.

Sufficient Cushioning

While a thin layer of cotton stuffing may be fine for a tiny dog, it isn’t nearly enough for a large breed or elderly dog. These dogs need extra padding to alleviate joint pressure, especially if they have arthritis.

Typically, you’ll want to look for a bed that is at least 3- to 4-inches thick. with a mix of memory foam for comfort and high-density foam for support.

If your dog is especially heavy or suffers from joint problems, you may even want a bed thicker than this.

Non-Skid Bottom

No one wants a bed on the move. No-slip bottoms keep beds in place, preventing your dog’s bed from wandering around the home.

Slipping and sliding while climbing into and out of beds is a common problem, particularly with mobility-challenged and elderly dogs. No-skid beds are the best dog beds for older dogs and those who are prone to falling.

Waterproof Liner

Keeping unwanted spills and accidents out of the dog bed’s interior is a must to prevent difficult clean-up and lingering smells.

Waterproof liners solve the problem, sealing off the inside and preserving the bed’s lifespan.

The best waterproof dog beds will have both an interior liner and a waterproof, removable cover.

Side Height & Bolsters

Some dogs adore beds with bolsters, cushions, or raised sides (which work especially well for cuddlers, dogs who curl up when they sleep, and dogs who like to place their noggin’ on headrests).

However, they can be an issue with dogs who lack mobility due to arthritis or other conditions. Sides that are too tall can lead to tripping or avoidance of the bed.

Filling

Not all bed stuffing is created equal. Cotton tends to get lumpy and uneven, and dogs that love shredding may find it irresistible.

Those same dogs may feel compelled to annihilate egg crate or memory foam. If your dog is a shredder, you may want to stick to thick mesh-based elevated dog beds

beds for dogs

How Much Should I Spend on a Dog Bed?

Dog beds can range quite a bit in price.

While the cheapest beds can be purchased for around $30 (or less), higher-end beds designed with several layers of support foam for giant breed canines can cost closer to $300 or even $400.

Generally though, you can get a great quality dog bed with 2-3 inches of quality slab foam for $100 – $200.

Obviously your budget will dictate how much you spend on a dog bed. However, dog beds aren’t a great area to cheap out on.

Why? Higher quality dog beds can go a long way to preventing and combating arthritis as your dog ages (which can come with its own host of medical costs and medications).

Spending a bit more on a better bed now may mean fewer costly vet visits in the future. Not to mention a more comfortable companion!

A comfy quality dog bed might also provide other unexpected benefits, such as freeing up more space on your couch.

Cheaper dog beds also won’t last as long – they’ll lose their shape more quickly, forcing you to buy a new bed within just a year or two (if not sooner in some cases).

Dog beds come in a variety of styles and types, and this should be one of the first things you think about when picking out a bed.

Bolster Dog Beds

Also Known As: Raised Edge Dog Beds / Donut Dog Beds / Nesting Beds

bolster dog beds

Bolster dog beds are beds featuring a raised border edge, which gives the bed a nest-like quality. Bolster beds come in a variety of sizes and are well-suited for small and large breed dogs alike.

Bolster, nesting, and donut beds all contain raised edges that can often make a nervous dog more at ease, as well as give your dog an area to rest his head or lean his body against.

There are some small distinctions within this category:

  • Donut beds tend to be very round and have thick, overstuffed rounded borders around the entire edge of the dog bed
  • Bolster beds usually only have two or three raised sides, with a lower edge that dogs can easily step in and out from

Many dogs love resting their head on the bolster bed’s elevated edge, using the bolster as a comfortable headrest. If you’ve caught your dog resting their head on your pillow, he’ll probably like a bolster bed.

Since bolster beds are rounded, they also tend to be better at retaining heat, making them a good option for cooler climates.

Bolster beds are ideal for dogs that like to curl up in a circle when they sleep. Nervous or anxious dogs also might enjoy a raised edge dog bed for the added sense of security it provides.

Memory Foam Dog Beds

memory foam dog beds

Memory foam dog beds are one of the more popular types of dog beds on the market today. They’re often sought after by owners who want the same comfort for their canines that they themselves enjoy from their own memory foam mattresses.

When discussing memory foam dog beds, we’re referring to substance rather than design or style. All different shapes and styles of dog beds can be made with memory foam stuffing.

It’s also important to understand that there are several types of memory foam and the type of foam does matter – quite significantly!

Not all beds labeled as “memory foam” are the same – some are made with shredded memory foam fill, while are others are made with thick slabs.

Cheaper memory foam beds can flatten out quickly, so consider spending a bit more for dog beds that use whole slabs of memory foam, rather than shredded memory foam fill.

Many owners make the mistake of believing that memory foam is the best filling for their dog, but in reality, the best dog beds have a mix of both memory foam and support foam.

while memory foam is very comfortable, it doesn’t provide much in the way of support. The best dog beds provide a mix of memory foam for comfort on the top layer, with more structural, supportive foam at the bottom to keep your dog’s joints from off the ground.

If the bed was made of pure memory foam, your dog would just sink right in!

Also keep in mind that some memory foam beds (especially cheaper ones) have a toxic-smelling odor when they’re initially opened. Many owners (and dogs too) aren’t too thrilled about such scents. However, airing out the bed for a few days often dispels any smells.

Memory foam beds are best for large and extra-large dogs, as these canines need additional support and padding to keep them comfy and keep their joints properly cushioned from the floor.

Buttercup Dog Beds

Also Known As: Daisy Dog Bed / Drawstring Dog Bed

buttercup dog beds

Buttercup dog beds aren’t incredibly common – you’ll mostly see them at high-end pet boutiques or on Etsy. However, they’re a solid option, especially for small dogs!

Buttercup beds are composed of a traditional round, largely flat-shaped bed with a toggle drawstring running through it.

When the drawstring is left slack, the bed sits open like a standard bed. When the drawstring is tightened, the bed bunches up around the edge to appear like a flower.

While this kind of bed is largely a novelty, it is unique that this bed can function as a standard flat bed as well as a nesting bed for your dog to burrow and hide in when they’re feeling a bit nervous.

The downside is that this design tends to only work well with smaller dogs – buttercup beds don’t come in sizes big enough to accommodate larger doggos.

This style of bed also won’t work well for chewers, as the drawstring can be quite tempting to gnaw on.

Buttercup beds come in all kinds of patterns and colors, partially due to the fact that most are custom ordered from sites like Etsy.

These beds also aren’t cheap, although we’d rate them as moderately priced in the larger range of dog bed price points.

Owners looking for a 2-for-1 dog bed that can function as a standard pillow dog bed as well as a nesting bed. Also a favorite for owners who wants a custom-styled, unique bed for their pup.

Pillow Dog Beds

Also known as: Loose Fill Dog Beds

pillow dog beds

Pillow dog beds are probably the most popular as well as the most basic type of dog bed you’ll come across. They are – as their name implies – more or less oversized pillows for your dog to lounge on.

Loose-fill pillow beds tend to be on the cheaper side, and are usually stuffed with low-grade polyester fiber fill. While this makes these beds very affordable, it also means that the stuffing tends to clump easily and break down over time.

You can also find pillow beds stuffed with cotton batting, bean-bag style foam beads, and other materials.

If you opt for a pillow dog bed, it’s essential that you choose one with a removable cover, as washing the entire bed will cause the cheaper stuffing to break down even further, resulting in a very short lifespan.

One of the major benefits of pillow beds is that they’re nearly everywhere, and they come in all kinds of different shapes, sizes, colors, and patterns to suit your preferences.

Some owners choose a pillow bed with a style or pattern they particularly love, and will then switch out the fill as it breaks down and replace it out with fresh fill from craft stores to keep the bed full and comfy.

Pillow beds are ideal for owners looking for an affordable, no-frills bed. They’re also worth considering if you’re looking for a particular pattern or color, as pillow beds tend to come with a wide selection of styles. If possible, opt for higher-quality fill.

Hammock Dog Beds

Also Known As: Mesh Beds / Raised Beds / Elevated Beds

hammock dog bed

Hammock dog beds are simple, efficient beds that keep your dog elevated off of the ground through the use of a sturdy frame with tightly woven mesh or fabric.

The frames are often composed of metal, wood, or PVC frame, making them a good option for chewers.

The raised surface protects your dog’s body from making contact with the hard ground, keeping pressure off of joints. The raised surface also makes it easier for mobility-impaired dogs to get in and out of the bed, providing further joint relief.

Hammock beds made of nylon mesh are also very easy to clean – all they need is a quick spray down. This makes them great choices for outdoor use or incontinent dogs. Because they are so easy to clean, you’ll often see these beds at animal shelters.

Raised dog beds have other benefits too – they allow air to circulate underneath your dog, keeping him cooler in hot weather.

These beds are especially suited for larger breeds who don’t need much padding, but would still prefer to be kept off of the ground. Great for warm weather climates and for thick-coated dogs who tend to overheat.

Cave Dog Bed

Also Known As: Burrowing Beds / Hooded Beds

cave dog bed

Cave dog beds are the ultimate sleep space for tiny pups that like to hide and burrow.

Nervous dogs tend to especially love nesting beds, as these beds are designed to provide warmth, comfort, and security.

The downfall of nesting beds is that they are really only designed for small and toy breeds (usually max size of 20lbs, if even that). Cave beds aren’t generally made to accommodate larger breeds.

Hooded cave beds are great for small dogs that like to burrow and snuggle. Also ideal for hairless or short-haired breeds that get cold easily.

Furniture Dog Beds

furniture dog beds

Furniture dog beds add a touch of class to the traditional dog bed.

While most dog beds sit off in a corner of a room, furniture dog beds let your pooch rest right in the middle of the action, without taking up any additional furniture space.

Furniture dog beds are dual-functional. They are usually designed as a coffee table or end table, with the bottom section hollowed out to function as a sleep spot for your pooch.

Since these beds are designed with décor and style in mind, they aren’t generally as durable as other beds.

Keep in mind that the “furniture bed” term refers more to the furniture structure – owners will still need to buy a crate pad or flat dog mattress to place inside the furniture structure.

Since these structures are more delicate, we don’t recommend them for rough pups or heavy chewers.

Furniture beds are great for owners who want a functional dog bed that doesn’t take up extra space and fits in with the home’s decor.

Sofa Dog Beds

sofa dog beds

Sofa dog beds are similar to furniture dog beds in that they are designed to emphasize style and design. However, rather than utilizing a piece of human furniture as a dog bed, this style of bed provides your pup with their very own couch to lounge on!

Sofa beds vary in style and size. Most owners seek out a sofa dog bed that matches their home décor (or even matches their own sofa).

Some couch dog beds also have storage compartments attached, offering an extra bonus.

The only issue with sofa dog beds is that most aren’t machine washable and require spot-cleaning instead, due to the high-end, furniture-grade fabric used.

This makes them a poor choice for dogs who are accident-prone, messy, or are big chompers.

While there are some sofa dog beds made for bigger canines, the majority tend to be suited for small-medium sized dogs.

Sofa beds are ideal for owners who want a stylish pet bed with a unique look. Best for small-medium dogs (although there are a few designs for big dogs as well).

Wooden Dog Beds

wood dog beds

The term “wooden dog bed” usually refers to the framing rather than the bed material itself – wooden dog beds need an inner pad or mattress so your dog doesn’t end up sleeping on a hard wooden surface.

Most owners who are interested in wooden dog beds appreciate the. style of design of wooden structures.

Wooden dog beds aren’t recommended for pups with a propensity for chewing – unless you don’t mind the bed getting shredded!

Owners who want a sophisticated wooden dog bed frame. Remember that you’ll need to buy bed padding for the inside of the wooden bed frame.

Heated Dog Beds

heated dog beds

Heated dog beds are perfect for owners and canines living in cold-weather climates. They’re also popular with dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors in their own dog house.

Heated dog beds tend to provide heat by one of two methods:

  • Self- generated body heat
  • Electricity-powered heat

Dog beds with electric heating pads that must be plugged in provide lots of warmth, but owners must worry about wire placement (many choose to thread the wires through PVC pipe) and where to plug in the unit. Electric units should absolutely be avoided if your dog has a tendency to chew!

Heated dog beds are well-suited for dogs who sleep outdoors, or for dogs who reside in cold climates.

Chew Proof Dog Beds

chewproof dog beds

Chew proof dog beds are designed to withstand tough chewing chompers.

These beds are composed of ultra-durable material, but the exact materials used for chew proof dog beds can vary Cordura, canvas, vinyl, and high denier nylon tend to be popular materials for chew-proof beds.

Also look for double stitching and, in some cases, double fabric layers to combat sharp teeth. Give extra attention to beds with warranties – in some cases, manufacturers will replace the bed for free if your dog demolishes it.

If your dog normally destroys standard toys and beds, then a chew proof bed is essential.

Mattress Dog Beds

Also Known As: Crate Pads / Dog Mattresses

dog bed matresses

Mattress dog beds are simple, flat, rectangular-shaped beds that are often designed to match standard dog crate dimensions.

They aren’t quite as elegant or flashy as other beds, but they get the job done just fine! Since they are usually made in several sizes to match various crate dimensions, they work great as crate pads or living room beds.

Mattress dog beds are good for owners who are looking for a simple, no-frills style of bed. They’re also great for placing inside of a dog crate (just make sure the measurements match).

Materials & Stuffing

Orthopedic dog beds are designed for optimal comfort and support. Many owners may think they want a memory foam dog bed for their arthritic dog, but really memory foam is just the half of it.

You see, memory foam is great for feeling cozy. It squishes down and forms around you. However, older arthritic dogs actually need some stiff support in their bed as well – a bed that’s nothing but give won’t help them at all!

That’s why orthopedic dog beds often feature a combination of cozy memory foam as well as more structured, heavy duty layers of support foam.

Big Barker is a great example – they make dog beds specifically for large and extra-large canines. Because these giant dogs put more wear and tear on their joints, Big Barker’s seven foam layer combination of memory foam + support foam is essential.

Now remember, Big Barker is great for large dogs, but those seven layers of foam would be way too much for a small dog. However, even older, arthritic small dogs will benefit from an orthopedic dog bed using a combination of memory and support foam. It’s just that Big Barker is – as its name hints at – is made specifically for large canines.

Orthopedic beds are also an excellent choice for thin dogs with prominent bone structures – these dogs require extra cushioning to stop friction between bone and floor.

Dog Bed Sizing: What Size Dog Bed Should I Get My Pooch?

When selecting the perfect bed for your pooch, all you have to do is take his measurements.

Keep in mind that it’s not your dog’s standard length that’s important, but rather his length while he’s in his sleeping position.

If your pooch likes to stretch out while he snoozes, go ahead and measure his full body. If your dog prefers to sleep curled up in a ball, use those measurements.

Next, add 8-12 inches to your dog’s lying length, and you have a ballpark number to use for his bed sizing.

Most manufacturers provide information regarding what size bed you should purchase, depending on your dog’s length.

When in doubt about which size dog bed to order, it’s always advised to round up.

Size Selection: How to Pick the Right Bed Size for Your Dog

The most important step in selecting a dog bed is picking the right size.

This isn’t just about your dog’s height or length, as weight plays a significant role in the end decision. Heavy dogs need high-quality, durable beds that won’t flatten or settle.

Similarly, small dogs need a bed that softens under their relatively low weight to avoid a stiff sleep surface. Be sure to keep your dog’s weight in mind, particularly if a prospective bed specifies weight in its size chart.

To select the proper overall size, you should measure your dog. The best time is during your dog’s nap, as you have him right in his natural sleeping position. Measure based on how he prefers to sleep.

After measuring the length of his sleeping form, add 8-12 inches to give him adequate wiggle room. Using this measurement, you can select a bed based on the manufacturer’s sizing chart.

Choose the Proper Size For Your Pooch

No dog wants to squeeze onto a tiny bed. Not only does it lack the padding he needs, but curling so tightly can be painful, especially in older dogs.

The best dog bed for small dogs is one that allows them to hop in easily and isn’t too stiff for them to sink into.

While large dog beds may give your small dog more room, many are made for a specific weight range and can be uncomfortable to lie on.

We explain how to pick the perfect bed size for your pup in the next section.

Dog Sleeping Styles: How Does Your Dog Sleep?

Different dogs prefer sleeping in different positions, so you’ll want to think about how your canine likes to catch Z’s before picking out a bed.

Position #1: Superman Stretch

These are canines who like to stretch their entire body out when they sleep, from front paws to the back of their booty.

They usually look pretty hilarious sleeping this way, posing superman-style as they snooze.

POSITION #1 PICK

Stretched out dogs will benefit most from a pillow or mattress dog bed

Position #2: All Curled Up & Cozy

This sleep style defines dogs who like to curl up into tight little balls while they sleep. Some dogs will tuck themselves so tightly that you can barely see their paws sticking out.

POSITION #2 PICK

For dogs that like to curl up, bolster dog beds or cave dog beds (for very small dogs) are best.

Position #3: Belly Up

Belly up dogs are those who sleep with their bellies up in the air! These pups love to roll onto their backs and nap the entire day away.

For these dogs, you’ll want to make sure that you choose a bed that provides plenty of support for your pooch’s spine.

You may witness dogs adopt this position to cool off in the summer, and reorient themselves as the weather changes.

POSITION #3 PICK

For belly-up pups, we recommend memory foam dog bed with plenty of support foam mixed in, or a hammock dog bed (which can help keep dogs cool during those hot summer days).

Position #4: Side Sleeper

Sleeping on the side is probably the most common dog sleeping position. These pups can plop down nearly anywhere and be content while they snooze.

POSITION #4 PICK

Most dog beds will work just fine for a side sleeper. If your dog likes to sleep leaning against objects, go with a bolster dog bed with raised edges for your pup to lean against.

Types of Dog Bed Fill

Dog beds come with a few different types of filling:

  • Foam Layers. Foam layers consist of thick chunks of whole foam. Look for mixed layers of support and memory foam for the best combination of comfort and support.
  • Polyester Filling. Known as polyfill for short, this material is soft, fluffy shredded polyester. Most canines find it quite cozy, but it won’t provide as much comfort as memory foam.
  • Shredded Foam. Shredded foam tends to be of lesser quality than solid layers of memory foam, but it can still provide a decent amount of comfort for your pooch (but will be lacking in support).
  • Cotton Batting. Cotton batting is a common filler for dog beds, but it’s quite cheap. Cotton batting won’t hold its shape and will get lumpy over time. It’s not generally recommended, but if you love a bed’s design, you can always remove cotton batting and replace it with better materials.
  • Recycled Materials. Some beds are made from recycled soda bottles and other shredded plastics.
  • Cedar Chips. As mentioned above, cedar chip dog beds aren’t terribly comfortable, but they can be helpful for combating especially stinky canines.

Still Not Sure? Ask Your Vet

Your vet will probably be quite helpful in selecting the perfect dog bed for your pooch – after all, your vet will be aware of any unique health needs your dog may have, and can point you in the right direction.

Introducing Your Dog to a New Bed

Some dogs may take some time to get adjusted to their new bed. If your dog doesn’t seem so sure of his new hangout spot, there are a few things you can do to encourage him to get cuddled up.

Try putting other things your dog likes and know are his – like toys and bones – on his bed.

Put some treats on the dog bed or try cuddling with your canine on his bed. Show your dog that this is indeed his new bed, all his own!

Whew! I know, you might need a nap just thinking about it all, but in the end, your dog will wind up with the perfect bed to dream about adventures on.
